No Galoshes
Far from man-made lake and
from its carnival of speedboats
I spied he shores of a pond,
moss lined in a tranquil wood.
The green water an antidote
to dizzy wake and waves,
I listened to the music of the frogs
as ink flowed from my pen.

Taurus Ray Zimmerman Taurus, bull of heaven, Zodiac constellation, lies on the ecliptic. Ishtar released the bull. It was vengeance against Gilgamesh who refused her affections. It scorched the earth. Gilgamesh said “Let us go and kill this bull of heaven.” Enkidu, his friend, demurred. “Let us not kill this bull of heaven,” yet they destroyed the bull. The land regained its strength. Ishtar asked her father for revenge. They have killed the bull of heaven! Gilgamesh, half divine, was spared. Mortal Enkidu died, lay in state for seven days. Equinox 2003 Ray Zimmerman Days grow short. Slanted Solar rays offer thin warmth. Autumn begins. Short days send northern birds. Chickadees and titmice share their harvest with warblers who join their flocks. Cicadas cease their buzz. Singing crickets rule the day. Katydids command the night, Repeat scandalous gossip. Driving down Broad Street this afternoon, I saw a homeless fellow carrying an oversized backpack, filled with what must have been everything he has in this world. Tied to the back of his pack, a rubber boot swung left to right with the rhythm of his stride. There was also a round case which looked to be about the right size to hold a Frisbee. I had no idea what was in the case, but it was the boot which intrigued me. It had no mate, and continued to swing back and forth. It thought that if he continued to carry the boot in that manner, he will eventually kick himself in the ass. So it is with many of us. We carry burdens which way us down and sway from side to side. They take our minds off the task at hand. Eventually they will kick us in the ass. |
