The Chattanooga Audubon Society is pleased to announce the reprint of Robert Sparks Walker’s book, As the Indians Left It, originally printed 1955.

As the Indians Left It is the story of Audubon Acres. Once the Walker Family farm and later, following Robert Sparks Walker's wishes, a wildlife sanctuary. The first half of the book details life on the farm in the early 1900's, when Chattanooga was a full day's ride by wagon from what is now East Brainerd. The book's second half recounts the formation and early years of the Chattanooga Audubon Society through the struggle to purchase Walker's siblings shares of the family farm to conflicts with neighbors who had grown used to hunting on the property. Throughout, the book provides a marvelous perspective on Robert Sparks Walker, Audubon Acres, and the preservation of Chattanooga's first wildlife sanctuary.
Thanks to Wonder Press, a local Chattanooga company for doing a great job with the reprint.

Janie Dempsey Watts
Reviewed by Ray Zimmerman

In this delightful narrative, Janie Dempsey Watts and illustrator Lyn Martin relate the story of a grandfather and grandson making an epic journey to a lovely city in a far away land. Shameless self promotion:
A sign similar to the one above inspired my poem titled "Sign" The poem appeared in the anthology, Southern Light: Twelve Contemporary Poets (c) 2011. It has received strong audience response in numerous performance venues since, including a near perfect score resulting in a win in a poetry slam.  It is a performance poem and the repetition is intentional.

Today I visited Big Soddy Gulf with the Nature Journaling Meetup Group. I did more photography than journaling, so I guess I was journaling with my camera. The sound of rapids  constantly with me, I took time to do some stretches at one point. A lovely morning in a beautiful natural area.

Last Thursday (June 28, 2018) I spent part of the morning hiking at Amnicola Marsh and Greenway Farm with a brief stop at Chickamauga Dam. This was a photographic excursion to test out a new camera and I got some interesting images, including the one at the left, a coneflower (AKA Echinacea). It bloomed in the small garden at the Hamil Road entrance to Greenway Farm. Numerous other flowers bloomed, both wild and in the garden.
Bird life was quiet, though I did see a pair of Blue-winged Teal and a Kingfisher at Amnicola Marsh. Due to limitations of the lens, I concentrated on macro images. Also got a nice image of a button bush at Amnicola Marsh. More photos from Greenway Farm appear below.
